The clarity of a diamond is measured with eleven clarity grades, ranging from flawless to I3. Because natural diamonds are the result of extreme heat and pressure in the earth, it is rare to find diamonds without a variety of characteristics. This intense process generally leads to internal characteristics known an “inclusions” as well as external characteristics called “blemishes”. A diamond with high clarity has little to no inclusions or blemishes.
Evaluating the clarity of a diamond involves determining the number, size, and position of these characteristics. This information is then used to determine the diamond clarity. The overall general appearance of the stone will also help determine the final grade. A flawless diamond has no inclusions or blemishes visible at 10x magnification, while I3 diamonds have imperfections that are easily visible without a microscope. No natural diamond is perfect, but near-perfect stones have higher values.
