Carat

The carat weight of a diamond measures the stone’s size. Specifically, carats measure how much a diamond weighs. A single metric “carat” weighs exactly 200 milligrams. To ensure accuracy, diamonds are measured on extremely precise electronic scales.
Each carat is divided into 100 “points.” This allows precise reporting, particularly for stones under one carat. If a jeweler refers to a diamond as being “45 points,” it is a 0.45 carat stone. Larger diamonds are more rare and sought after, so prices generally increase as diamond carat weights increase.
